SURVIVAL TIPS FOR YOUR ADVENTURES
Luis Felipe Giraldo Mejia (PIPE) is a 41-year-old Colombian who has dedicated his life to studying and practicing survival techniques from various parts of the world, specializing in indigenous techniques in the tropical jungle. He is a knife smith, and a lover of adventure and nature. He has managed to challenge himself in various adverse terrains worldwide. He also managed to survive the 21 days of Discovery Channel's ultimate survival challenge, Naked Survival.
BE PREPARED
It is essential to know how to be self-sufficient, Luis says. Practicing is the key to feeling good about your knowledge, both mechanically and in your physical and mental abilities. The challenges that can arise in the middle of an inhospitable place, you will overcome positively with the confidence and the experience you have acquired.
Practicing basic mechanics and having basic knowledge of survival and first aid will make your routes, distances, and terrain safer.
MEASURE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Having good information about the place you are going to visit and the roads you will travel will make your experience a little more controllable. Even when we do not know what mishaps we can run into, having a good knowledge of the area we will visit gives us a clearer vision of where we have the closest help. In the event of a moment of danger, your knowledge of the place and survival techniques will make you feel calmer and free of worries.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
Being creative with the elements you have at your disposal is a crucial attitude and skill. Many elements that are normal for us can provide different services. One example is spare tires, or a rope to create shelters or fire starters and extenders.
HOW TO MAKE FIRE
Knowing at least three different ways to make a fire is key when embarking on an adventure on your motorcycle. Damp weather can cause one of those techniques to fail, so we're going to need a backup to find a way to protect ourselves. Fire not only gives us a way to make water drinkable or cook food; it also gives us protection, helps us control our body temperature, and easily position ourselves before others, during both the day and at night.
Having the skills to make fire helps us to be self-sufficient in the face of environmental adversities.
HOW TO USE A KNIFE
A good cutting tool makes a difference in a motorcycle adventure; we will always need to cut something, whether it's a wick, or a fruit that we find along the way. This tool is key on our bike.
It is one of the most challenging elements to recreate in nature, so it is essential that we always have a quality tool within our reach.
HOW TO MAKE AN IMPROVISED SHELTER
In our adventures, situations can arise that lead us to spend the night at the mercy of the elements. Having a waterproof roof within our equipment will save us a lot of time when it comes to having to spend the night in a distant place. One of our most important skills should be being able to create a makeshift shelter in which we can protect ourselves from the environment and the elements.
